A TV reporter in Romania has been left red faced after he was said to have faked a sandstorm when he missed the real event.

The Realitatea TV news channel reporter was stitched up by his cameraman who revealed to viewers that the journalist appeared to be taking part in a stunt.

''The wind blows the sand at over 60 km per hour. The wind blew away the beach umbrellas and the tourists had to leave in a hurry.''

Footage showed the reporter struggling to stand up due to sand viciously blowing in his direction on the country's Black Sea coast, but the cameraman then pans around to see one of the production crew kicking sand at him.

During the report, he says: ''The wind blows the sand at over 60 km per hour. The wind blew away the beach umbrellas and the tourists had to leave in a hurry.''

But the TV journalist and the channel insist the report was genuine.

The reporter said: ''The report was not doctored in any way. It was a bad joke made by the cameraman.''
