Chris Rock's hair wait

Tuesday 10th February 2009 - 13:30:16

Chris Rock waited 15 years to make his new documentary 'Good Hair'.

The comedian says his film - which explores the importance of hair in the US Afro-American community - was a project he had wanted to pursue for a long time, and was finally started after he was inspired by his daughters’ locks.

He explained: "I just stumbled across the hair show when I was in Atlanta doing stand-up about 15 years ago and I thought it was one of the most interesting, insane events I'd ever seen in my life.

"I always had that idea. But when I first got the idea a) I wasn't in any position to get anybody to give me money. And b) they weren't making funny documentaries 15 years ago.

"Then, cut to now, I got daughters and, my daughters started having hair issues, my friends started to have hair issues. I had a little break, and it just seemed like, let's - we'll get this one shot. It was something I felt passionate about."

Chris also said he found it surprisingly easy to interview people for the film.

He added: "I conducted the interviews, but I never was in a position where I had to pull teeth, or whatever. I was always - 'How's your hair?’ They couldn't wait to talk about their hair. No one had ever asked them about their hair. No one had ever taken their hair seriously. So, they couldn't wait to talk about it."
