Fans of the Beatles set a new world record in the band's native Liverpool, England on Friday (05Oct12) to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of their first hit Love ME DO.

We wanted everybody to be able to celebrate together and we wanted the eyes of the world to be on Liverpool

The Fab Four's debut single hit store shelves on 5 October, 1962, and in recognition of the occasion, more than 1,600 fans from around the world descended on the group's home city for a mass singalong to the track.

And the event landed a place in history - the 1,631 voices that took part achieved an entry in the Guinness World Records, according to the BBC.

Jerry Goldman, Managing Director of the Beatles Story exhibition, says, "We wanted everybody to be able to celebrate together and we wanted the eyes of the world to be on Liverpool".
