5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Film   December 17, 2006

I have to admit i havent read the book, although it comes highly recommended! But still this film is amazing, visually stunning, with some beautiful shots of Venice. It captures the colour and life of the city through the eyes of children. Some of the special effects aren't extraordinary but the story more than makes up for it.
The young actors are wonderful, Aaron as Prosper is moving and loving, Bo is very sweet and innocently insightful and Rollo Weeks is stunning and alternatly commanding and childlike as Scripio.
Even without the book, this is well worth watching!! I love it!
Its a world to escape to, a dream about childhood adventure and with the touching, hilarious supporting characters well depicted as highly reccommended as the book.
Good for Kids, and anyone else to!

5 out of 5 stars Two words; Pure magic!!!!   July 6, 2008

The plot: two children have run away from their aunt and have been befriended by a gang of street kids and their leader, the Thief Lord, also known as Scipio. A detective, who has been hired by the aunt, is looking for the children. However, a mysterious comte asks them to steal something for him, something that can help to spin time!

When I read the book, the plot seemed to me to be a little bit like Oliver Twist, as Scipio is like Fagin and the Dodger rolled into one, and Prosper and Bo are like two Olivers. The film is even better than the book, which I thought would be impossible!!!!!!!

All the actors do a fantastic job, but Rollo Weeks as Scipio and Aaron Johnson as Prosper are the best BY A MILE!!! Rollo Weeks manages to pull off both sides of Scipio - just in case there are people reading this who haven't read the book or seen the film, I won't give the game away by telling you what the other side of him is - while Aaron Johnson is just....well, there are no words to describe how fantastic he is as Prosper!

If you like watching films about drama, fantasy and magic, then this one is for you.

5 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Family Film.   June 7, 2007

This is a fantastic family film. There are not too many family films made these days-by that I mean ones that you can watch en masse without squirming uncomfortably into the sofa whilst inappropriate images (or phrases) flash about on screen.Call me old fashioned (though not yet 40!)but I love these sorts of films.
The acting is superb and the relationship between the two main child actors,Prosper and Bo is a joy to watch.I agree with one of the other reviews-there is a similarity to Oliver Twist,it's a 21st century version though! My 11 year old son informs me that the film is better than the book so if your child has read and not enjoyed the book please do not let that put you off the film.I would highly recommend this film for those rainy days when there is nothing else to do but settle down with popcorn and small people and escape to another world for a magical adventure.5*

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable   July 12, 2009
I think that The Thief Lord is a really enjoyable film. I would recommend this movie to children and adults. The plot is great and the charactors play thier parts well. It is the type of film that you might watch when you just want to kick back and relax. Set in Venice, this is a movie about two children, 12 year old Prosper and 5 year old Boniface, nicknamed Bo. They flee to Venice in order to escape their aunt Esher, who wants to adopt Bo but not Prosper. They befriend a gang of street children, hidind out in an abandoned cinema, under leadership of 15 year old Scipio a master thief. Thier aunt, also in Venice fires a detective to find them. Running from thier aunt and hiding out with pick pockets they uncover a secret that will change their lives forever. This is a film for people of all ages! The book, The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke is worth reading. If however, you are one of a few who do not like this film I still think that you should not let that stop you from reading the book. I hope that this is helpful. The Thief Lord

5 out of 5 stars an interesting discovery   June 14, 2009

I have never heard of this movie or the book. I found this while browsing DVD clearance offers. I took a chance based on the fact that the cover looked like a good movie from the WB LIST.
Two orphaned brothers run away from an oppressive aunt to Venice, where they were rescued by the Thief Lord. Their aunt and uncle send a private detective to find them, while the children join the adventurous world of the Thief Lord and his gang. More like a harmless gang of children trying hard to survive the best way they can the cruelties meted by adults.
It was a rewarding and pleasant experience to watch this movie. It does not take long to figure out that the children were not really bad, but were trying to escape the wrongful control and oppressive suppression by the adults, most of them were orphans. I enjoyed the adventures, the suspense and the quirkiness of some of the characters and story line. I thought the children actors did very well and the characters of the Thief Lord and the 2 runaway brothers were my favourite. The magic twist with the 'Merry-go round and the mysterious animals was really cooooooooool. This is a definite gem of a movie, one that had me watching it several times to relive the adventure and comedy of it all. I definitely recommend this movie as a family movie that will appeal to all.
