| Customer Reviews: A double-edged sword... April 27, 2010 J. Morris (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Descent: A brilliant movie about a group of spelunkers who venture into an uncharted cave system, get lost and find out that they are not alone in the dark. Tense and claustraphobic, most of this movie will have your heart in your mouth. It's well filmed despite the dark environs and the all-female cast play the roles very well, despite being relative-unknowns. It's an excellent survival suspense film that is not unnecessarily gory but needless to say it doesn't end well for most of the protagonists, really a must watch!
The Descent 2: Based on the 'happier' ending of the former, Descent 2 picks up where we left off, we find our heroine washed out of the cave-system and suffering from amnesia. Police DNA test her clothing and find traces of blood from all of her caving buddies and decided to mount a rescue mission to go back into the caves and find them. Unaware of what awaits her - again - Sarah is forced to go back to look for her friends, conveniently remembering the horrors that lurk just AFTER they pass the point of no return.
This is where the second movie falls flat on it's face. If the police DNA tested her clothing, wouldn't they have found crawler blood on her clothing also seeing as she was nearly covered in it by the end of the first instalment? Some unrecognised, yet human-like DNA would have a squad of scientists crawling all over the cave network, not some poorly-prepared, half-witted cops and a traumatised survival victim. The whole premise is just a bit weak and really feels like they are trying to get the mileage out of the franchise. Coupled with a weird mine-owning/dwelling bloke who just doesn't fit the story and needless amount of gore, The Descent 2 is an awful parody in juxtapostion with the first.
However, if you are like me and like things in complete sets, this is the box-set to get; a nice suite of extras thrown in, behind the scenes and a making of featurette, plus a couple of interviews with the cast.
