Superb June 1, 2010 Ann Brogan (Frankfurt, Germany) I prefer this to the first Shock Value album although going by the BBC reviewer, it should be a disappointment. Maybe I just have bad taste but what I've always liked about Timbaland's music are his great hooks and beats which make you want to get up and dance around the place with abandon. You'll find plenty of those here. I am not normally a fan of Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry but I just couldn't stop my feet tapping along to these tracks after the first listen, ditto "Meet in the Middle". But then, maybe that's just me and my bad taste ....
Just one quibble Timothy, in future, please refrain from collaborating with such wet groups as OneRepublic, Daughtry and Nickelback or you'll send this long-time fan running screaming for the hills, once is enough baby!
5 Stars for the effort, 4.5 for the result January 28, 2010 Mr Entropy (London) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This album seemed to have a rather quiet release and didn't have the advertising force behind it that Shock Value did. Presumably they relied upon the reputation of the first album to speak of the quality of the follow up, and the quality definitely follows on. The album is a similar to the previous with a diverse mix of guests on virtually every track, ranging between R&B, hip hop, pop and rock.
The stand out track this time round is Ease off the Liquor, where 5 or 6 channels of voices and electronic sounds are effortlessly mixed with spontaneous ever changing beats. The quality production levels and pumping bass we have come to expect are repeated on the majority of tracks, but of course not all tracks are as strong as each other. Where this album can falter slightly is on the more experimental side with cross genre artists. They can sound like weaker muted efforts compared to the best songs on this album which are eclectic and powerful, they simply have the added timbaland base to an light hearted track and I quickly learned which to skip.
I applaud the attempt to mix genres, it's why I've bought these last two Timabaland albums. When done right it can be as ground breaking as JayZ's appearance on Linkin Parks tracks sounded, but when gone wrong it becomes album filler material, like Linkin park appearing on JayZ's tracks! As examples on this album I felt that the tracks with Chad Kroeger and Daughtry worked very well and even the track with Miley Cyrus was decent enough, but the tracks with Jet and Katy Perry felt lacklustre. These are all good artists and I don't doubt a second collaboration attempt could be improved upon in these few cases. Though picking on these couple of tracks is just a personal opinion and I'm sure everyone will have a varying preference range.
If you liked Shock Value, Shock Value 2 is an easy purchase decision, it is a great follow up as you will find the same, if not higher, quality than the first album. The number of tracks is very generous and you will likely find a high proportion of these are top notch catchy songs that stay in your head all day long. The diversity of tracks and ongoing attempts to break new ground remains the strong point of the album, bring on Shock Value 3!
Total Awesome January 28, 2010 Mrs. S. Harper-ashton (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album is better than the first shock value if that is possible. Some very unusual colabriations. Very catchy some of them. Definitely a good listen.
