General Fiasco are a splendid little three-piece from Northern Ireland.

Owen Strathern sings and plays bass; his brother Enda attends to guitar
and Stephen ("Leaky" - erk!) Leacock beats the drums with gusto.

'Buildings' is their debut album and its ten tracks deliver a convincing
dose of hard-edged melodic pop which, despite its somewhat
formulaic nature, is both engaging and entertaining. They put their
hearts into it and the energy is palpable and unaffected.

The verse/chorus ground plan for the songs is structurally sound.
Modern but constructed on a human scale without the need for
extraneous decoration and non-functional architectural detail.

Here and there, as on title track 'Buildings' and 'Sinking Ships',
strings contribute additional depth and texture to the proceedings.
The latter is a particularly strong composition. Mr Strathern's
staccato vocal performance is particularly enjoyable.

Mr Leacock's powerful work behind the drums, here and everywhere,
propels the music forward with passion and precision.
'I'm Not Made Of Eyes' is a good case in point. For a small ensemble
they make a big sound. Simple but competent vocal harmonies and
rock solid guitar-work make for a truly uplifting listening experience.

Single 'Ever So Shy' is a worthy ambassador for the album.
The guileless enthusiasm of its chugging rhythm and cracking
chorus is highly infectious. I imagine it will be an especially
popular number when delivered in a live context.

Final track 'First Impressions' struts and staggers along in the
nicest possible way. The band does not feel the need to fill
every moment with sound. It is this contrast between density
and space which gives the melodies room to breathe and ensures
that the climatic moments hit their mark with real emotional clout.

General Fiasco have made a fine first album.
A bright future may well be there for the taking
(the man with the bunny-ears notwithstanding!)

Recommended.
