Roger Federer also looked in good form as he got his Indian Wells campaign underway overnight.
It was a tenth straight win for Federer in what has been a great start to the season, he has already won two title; Rotterdam & Dubai.
He may have been suffering slightly from a stomach bug but that didn't stop the former world number one from making light work of Denis Kudla.
Federer peppered the Kudla serve from the very beginning, breaking five times from six opportunities.
Kudla did hold his own at the beginning of the match but once Federer had the upper hand he never relinquished his lead.
He dropped just five games in a straightforward 6-4 6-1 win to progress into the third round.
Speaking to the BBC after the match he said: "I'm always relieved and happy when I am able to find my way into a tournament.
"It's a good start for me. I didn't know Kudla very much, or at all, really, so it was a good win for me."
In the third round he will face talented younger Milos Raonic in what could be one of the best matches of the young.
Raonic is another player who has made a strong start to the season with a couple of titles already under his belt.
And the Canadian enjoyed easy passage to the next round as he saw off Carlos Berlocq 6-4 6-2 in just seventy six minutes.
