Jane Eyre tells the story of a young governess from Gateshead working for a difficult employer, Mr Rochester at Thornfield Hall. Her childhood is not a happy one as she is abused both emotionally and physically by her aunt and cousins. Her schooling prepares her for employment and she finds herself falling in love Rochester. During her time there she receives a proposal from her cousin St John Rivers, however becomes reunited with her actual love, Mr Rochester. The book was first published in 1847 under the name Currer Bell. The book is revolutionary in showing female strength and intelligence matching the class of the man she was in love with. It is thought to be one of the most influential novels of all time as its themes of sexism and feminism were thought to change the course of literary history.

Charlotte Bronte, the eldest of three sisters and is well known for her other novels The Professor and Shirley. The novels has been adapted several times over for screen, the most recent is the version starring Michael Fassbender, as well as being vamped up to become part of the erotic novel revolution in Jane Eyre Laid Bare.
