She remembered more than me, but then she's younger than me! She's one year younger."
Shirley Maclaine felt sure she was meeting Dame Maggie Smith for the first time on the set of TV drama Downton Abbey until the great Brit reminded her of an unfortunate night at the Academy Awards.
The American movie veteran admits her fellow septuagenarian has a terrific memory and can recall meetings with celebrities dating back to her early career - Smith recalled one backstage encounter with her co-star that Maclaine is keen to forget.
She explains, "She told me that we had met 40 years ago backstage at the Oscars next to the catering table. I was up for something, and there was this big chocolate cake on the catering table. And whatever I was up for, I lost, and somebody else won.
"Maggie said, 'You know what you did, dear? You tucked right into that chocolate cake and said, 'F**k it! I don't care if I'm thin ever again.'
