Comedian Craig Ferguson has added his name to the U.S. late-night TV host carousel after announcing he will be leaving The Late Late Show at the end of the year (14).

CBS and I are not getting divorced, we are 'consciously uncoupling', but we will still spend holidays together and share custody of the fake horse and robot skeleton, both of whom we love very much

Just weeks after his fellow CBS network chat show host David Letterman announced his retirement, the Scottish funnyman and author is stepping down after nine years.

He broke the news to his studio audience during the taping of his show on Monday (28Apr14), before joking about his departure in a statement, referencing Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's recent split.

The statement reads "CBS and I are not getting divorced, we are 'consciously uncoupling', but we will still spend holidays together and share custody of the fake horse and robot skeleton, both of whom we love very much".

Ferguson's show features a sidekick who is a robot and a pantomime horse.

Comedian Stephen Colbert has been tapped to replace Letterman once he steps down in 2015.

It is not known who will replace Ferguson.
