A bronze statue of Woody Allen in the Spanish city of Oviedo has been defaced by locals after his estranged daughter, Dylan Farrow, renewed allegations of child molestation against the revered director.
The tribute, which was erected in 2002, became a target for protesters after Farrow, Allen's adopted child with ex-wife Mia Farrow, repeated claims she first made in 1992 in a blog post published by the New York Times last week (01Feb14), suggesting the Hollywood director sexually abused her when she was seven years old.
Allen vehemently denied the accusations in his own open letter in the Times on Saturday (08Feb14), blaming the Rosemary's Baby actress for manipulating their daughter and convincing her of the false claims.
However, the revived scandal appears to have soured some Spanish locals' opinion of Allen after posters blasting paedophilia were plastered over the statue.
One sign, written in Spanish, stated, "Paedophiles out of our city", while another, stuck to the front of the sculpture, read "I am a paedophile".
A garbage bag that had been placed over the statue's head also had to be removed by officials.
Dylan's original claims were investigated after they surfaced in 1992, but no charges were ever filed.
