A nine-year-old girl is in rehab after becoming so addicted to 'Fortnite' she would wet herself in order to keep playing.

The primary school pupil secretly got up in the night after her parents were in bed and played the survival shooter game from Epic Games until dawn.

The girl wet herself while playing because she could not bear to leave the screen to go to the toilet and hit her father when he tried to confiscate her games console.

Her parents bought her a games console in January and only became aware of her secret addiction in March when teachers alerted them to the fact she had been falling asleep at school.

Mum Carol, 36, told The Sunday People newspaper: "My husband saw her light on in the night and found her sitting on a urine-soaked-cushion playing the game.

"I found her backside was red-raw. She was so hooked to the game she wouldn't even go to the toilet."

Her parents confronted her in the morning.

Her mother said: "Crying, she told us that every night for the past two months she had waited until we were asleep and then got up to play, sometimes until 5am.

"We worked out that she could have been playing for up to ten hours a day, and we'd had no idea."

As well as staying awake all night to play the game, the girl was spending up to £50 a month on add-ons for the game.

Carol said: "We had no idea, when we let her play the game, of the addictive nature or the impact it could have on her mental health. She is in therapy for the addiction after she became withdrawn, agitated and disturbed from playing...

"This is a serious issue which is destroying our little girl's life and someone needs to step in to ban it before it becomes an epidemic."
