'Groundhog Day' is getting the VR game treatment.
The popular 1993 fantasy-comedy movie by Harold Ramis, which starred Bill Murray as Phil Connors, may not be getting a big screen sequel anytime soon, but that hasn't stopped Sony Pictures Virtual Reality announcing their plans to publish and produce an immersive gaming experience for fans of the film.
The game is titled 'Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son' and sees Murray's alter-ego's "arrogant" son find himself stuck in his hometown, where he has to repeat the day "over and over" again until he realises the importance of family and friends.
The synopsis reads: "In Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, you'll play as the charming but arrogant Phil Connors Jr., who grew up in the shadow of his father -- a man who spent a lifetime repeating a single day until he had made it perfect.
"But for Phil Jr., today is the worst day of his life. He's trapped back home in Punxsutawney, the small town he thought he'd escaped, where he can't even get a decent cappuccino -- and he's going to have to repeat the day over and over, until he learns the true value of friends and family."
The movie follows Phil (Murray), a weatherman, who is out to cover the annual emergence of the groundhog from its hole.
He gets caught in a blizzard that he didn't predict and finds himself trapped in a time warp. He is doomed to relive the same day over and over again until he gets it right.
In 2017, the movie was adapted into a Broadway stage show and Murray revealed he saw the show twice in the same week.
He said at the time: "I had some observations watching it again, and it's really beautiful ... As the product of the story turns to joy, the audience gets more and more excited.
"You have an unusual opportunity to do something that just really affects people."
The game will be released for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive later this year.
