'Sea of Thieves' could have a Battle Royale mode in the future, if it can put its own spin on the genre.
Developer Rare has opened up on possibilities for the Xbox One and Windows 10 title, and insisted it would only consider jumping on the hugely popular trend if it could do something different to titles like 'Fortnite'.
Design director Mike Chapman told Game Informer: "We see the battle royale thing, but I think there will be opportunities to do that kind of thing differently.
"It's interesting where you can take PvP in the game, but we'd want to put a unique 'Sea of Thieves' spin on it and do something completely surprising."
Studio boss Craig Duncan agreed, adding that it's importance to differentiate yourself from the competition and push new idea, rather than borrowing from others.
He explained: "It's not about taking something that works super well in another game, and going, 'Hey, let's start everyone in a 'Sea of Thieves' map from different points and have you all come together.' "
The company instead want to continue to deliver more content to players, with the Forsaken Shores and Cursed Sails expansions coming this year and promising new ships and items, and fresh ways to explore the world.
Champan added that Rare want any upcoming content to follow a guiding principle of giving gamers something unique and unexpected.
He said: "We want to keep doing these kinds of unexpected things that only we can do."
