According to GameRant, the tech giant has revealed details of the new wireless device, which aims to provide users with an all-round more comfortable gaming experience.

A description for the prototype reads: "A controller for interfacing wirelessly with a computing device is provided, including the following: a housing defined by a main body, a first extension extending from a first end of the main body, and a second extension extending from a second end of the main body, the first extension and the second extension for holding by a first hand and a second hand of a user, respectively; a touchscreen defined along the top surface of the main body between the first extension and the second extension; a first set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the first extension and on a first side of the touchscreen; and a second set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the second extension and on a second side of the touchscreen."

The current PS4 controller already features a colour-changing LED light bar.

The patent news comes after Sony launched four new colours of the DualShock 4 controller in September.

The multinational conglomerate company released new shades of the remote in Berry Blue, Sunset Orange, Blue Camouflage and Copper.

Sony's Steve Schwartz wrote in the official blog post: "Bright, playful, and fun, the new Berry Blue edition brings new flavour to the DS4 lineup, while the vibrant Sunset Orange brings a little heat to your gameplay. The two-tone design offers a stylish contrast that makes the buttons and sticks pop! If you're a fan of trendy patterns, the Blue Camouflage DS4 will be right up your alley. Alternatively, if you'd prefer sticking to one colour, stand out with another metallic addition to the lineup with the shiny and refined new Copper DS4."

The brand also made an announcement on its official Twitter page, writing: "The DualShock 4 lineup expands next month with the addition of four bold new colors: Which one's your favorite? (sic)"

The controllers were made available in the US and Canada for $64.99, but they won't be around forever as they'll only be on sale "while supplies last".
