Life Of Pi

Starring: Suraj Sharma, Irfan Khan, Tabu, Adil Hussain

Director: Ang Lee

Rating: 4.5/5

Ang Lee is a director who isn't afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to filmmaking and over the years he has been behind some wonderful movies.

That tradition continues this week as he brings the Yann Martel novel to life with triumphant results.

Life Of Pi follows the story of a young man’s incredible survival at sea against almost impossible odds.

From start to finish this is a beautiful looking movie as real care and attention has been given to the CGI - these are some of the best special effects that I have seen all year.

There is something otherworldly about the movie from start to finish and it really is a landmark in visual mastery.

Bringing Martel's novel to life was a huge challenge and Ang Lee has delivered a bold and beautiful movie that is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking.

This is a fable that has a real sting in its tale and the twist in the story was something that was so unexpected.

But Life of Pi is a story that deals with some universal themes of survival, friendship, faith and finding faith and all of these ideas are dealt with ain an incredibly powerful way.

Suraj Sharma takes on the role of young Pi Patel and you would not know that this is his big screen debut as he delivers a fantastic performance and really commands the screen.

It is a powerful performance because he spends most of the movie alone with no one to play off and yet he holds your attention with an emotional performance.

Tiger Richard Parker is one of the best characters to hit the big screen this year.

The character is a mix between CGI and a real tiger and it is just so fantastically achieved.

The relationships between Pi and Richard Parker is the most important one in the movie and it just works so well.

The pair reach an understanding and they keep each other alive - it really is incredibly moving.

Life of Pi is a movie triumph the shows Ang Lee pushing the boundaries of filmmaking once again.

He is perhaps not a direct that we associate with special effects laden movies and yet he has delivered a truly beautiful, engaging and exciting movie about human endurance and strength.
