Manchester City face paying a world-record transfer fee for a defender to land Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci.

Bonucci remains Pep Guardiola’s priority defensive target - despite the fact he turns 30 in a matter of days - as the manager bids to bolster his back line in what is expected to be a huge overhaul of City’s playing squad during the close season.

City were put off by a price tag of £50m last summer but that is only going to have gone up after he signed a new contract last December for a further four years.

With Juve closing in on a Champions League and Serie A double, they are in no rush to see a star man leave and will not be forced to sell unless the money reaches ridiculous proportions.
