Jamaal Lascelles says Newcastle have finally proven they have got the stomach for the fight after defeating Swansea 3-0.
The Magpies have been criticised for their performances for most of the season, but they hit a new low last week when slipping to a gutless defeat at Southampton.
Lascelles is thought to have been the most outspoken player in the dressing room inquest after the game, and he was delighted with the response from his team-mates against the Swans.
Newcastle are still in deep trouble as they prepare to face Manchester City next, but Lascelles says the whole team are now prepared to fight over the remaining games.
“It’s like a breath of fresh air," he said after the win. “People were umming and ahhing about whether we could do it but we showed we’re no pushovers.
“Everybody wanted it and in the changing room before the game, there was just something there and that’s definitely what we’ve lacked.
“We had big characters playing today, characters who have come out of their shell and we needed that.
“It’s clear that we can pass and cross the ball but the other side of things, the battling and fighting, we’ve shown today.”
