Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is set to meet club chairman Stewart Milne for talks after Rangers were denied permission to speak to him.
The in-demand Dons manager did not take training on Wednesday morning and, according to the Press Association, he instead headed for a face-to-face meeting with Milne to discuss his future.
Rangers signalled their intentions to make a move for McInnes weeks ago but it has taken time for the behind-the-scenes work done to come to fruition.
The Ibrox board decided to wait until last week’s doubleheader with Aberdeen was out of the way before making their move.
But the Dons have knocked back their opening approach for the 46-year-old, stating on Tuesday night that “permission has been refused”.
Reports now claim McInnes may have to offer his resignation in order to force through a move to Ibrox, where he served as a player between 1995 and 2000.
