McLaren have made it clear that rookie driver Stoffel Vandoorne is not under any pressure during what is a tough first season.
The Belgian youngster has only finished one race this season, when he was two laps down in the season opener in Australia and finished in 13th spot.
In China he retired and last week at Bahrain he never made the grid following more issues with the Honda engine at McLaren.
There look to be few signs that things are going to get any better, or any quicker, any time soon at McLaren but racing director Eric Boullier says Vandoorne is not under pressure for his position in the team.
He told Auto Motor and Sport: "Stoffel knows that we believe in him and have him under contract for a long time.
"He does not have to prove to us every race what he can do; we understand that this is not possible at the moment."
