The Australian revealed back in November, just before the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, that he was in no rush to enter into negotiations about his future and was happy to see how things went in 2018.

In contrast, current team-mate Max Verstappen has committed himself to the Austrian team until 2020 after impressing over his two seasons, finishing fifth and sixth in the Drivers' Championship in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Ricciardo has now entered the final year of his contract and, although knowing there is an element of danger in what he is doing, he believes the right outcome will come from his actions.

"Yeah I'm aware as well that there's always a risk," he said, whilst speaking to RACER. "The longer you leave it, then if you're not performing you're looking less and less desirable race by race.

"But that's where I've obviously got confidence in my approach and what I'm going to do – and I've got confidence that I will be performing. We'll see what happens after the first little bit of the season."
