Woods optimistic about return

The American is set to miss the rest of the PGA Tour after confirming he has been forced to go under the knife again.

Woods, a 14-time major champion, had the surgery at the Texas Back Institute as he tries to ease ongoing pain in his back and a leg.

He had a damaged disc removed to relieve the pressure on a nerve and the 41-year-old is set to miss the next six months of action.

Speaking about his options, Woods is confident he can return pain-free and finally start to challenge for titles.

He said in a statement: "The surgery went well and I'm optimistic this will relieve my back spasms and pain.

"When healed, I look forward to getting back to a normal life, playing with my kids, competing in professional golf and living without the pain I have been battling so long."
