Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reported to be lining up a swoop for AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas when the transfer window opens.
Wenger moved into the transfer market to snap up Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia in the summer but he is on the look out for more defensive reinforcements as doubts surround the future of Per Mertesacker.
Mertesacker is wanted back in Germany with both Hannover and Werder Bremen in the hunt for his services and Wenger could need to draft in a replacement.
Manolas was a target in the summer before the Gunners landed Mustafi so Wenger is well aware of his talents and could make an approach in the January window.
However, Wenger will face strong competition for his services as reports also suggest that Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is also keeping tabs on the Greek international.
Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked in the past and could reignite their interest should Roma make Manolas available.
