Wesley Hoedt believes he and Virgil van Dijk can form a "very good partnership" at the heart of the Southampton defence this season.

Hoedt relishing Van Dijk partnership

The 23-year-old was seen as a replacement for Van Dijk when he arrived at St Mary's from Lazio this summer, only for his Dutch compatriot to fail to get his way when trying to force his way out of the club.

With Van Dijk now slowly working his way back in to the first-team picture, Hoedt is hopeful he will get the chance to play alongside the former Celtic man in future, believing they have the makings of a good partnership.

However, the Dutchman knows he will have to prove himself worth of a starting berth in Mauricio Pellegrino's team, with Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek also in contention.

“We’re both Dutch so that’s an advantage and we’re very similar so we could have a very good partnership,” he told the Daily Echo, when asked about Van Dijk.

“Not only us but we have three other central defenders who are really good so that’s nice. It’s always good to have competition.”

Hoedt says he is impressed Southampton managed to hang on to Van Dijk during the transfer window, claiming it shows the ambition the club has going forward.

He added: “That was their ambition and that’s something that I really liked and they wanted me really fast, so that was really why I wanted to come here.”
