Manchester United's Phil Jones is expected to resume training on Thursday following the thigh injury he picked up on England duty.

Jones has reported some improvement since hobbling out with an apparent strain in the friendly encounter with Germany at Wembley last Friday.

The 25-year-old has been closely monitored in the last 48 hours and will be put through his paces in the morning session at Carrington, having been sent back to Manchester for treatment.

Jones is certainly no stranger to repeated niggles and United boss Jose Mourinho was again fearing the worst, having been suitably impressed by Jones' showings this term.

The Red Devils, however, certainly won't take any risks with the burly defender, with a decision still to be made whether Jones is now fit and ready to face Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jones is determined to retain his place for the visit of Rafa Benitez's side, knowing United have Marcos Rojo waiting in the wings again after several months out with a knee injury.
