Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez has confirmed Arsenal were keen to sign him but says the Gunners could not afford him.
Arsenal had a bid accepted for Foxes striker Jamie Vardy but the player opted to stay with the Premier League champions, and now it looks as though there attempts to land Mahrez also failed.
The midfielder has confirmed that Arsenal made an approach to sign him, but Leicester were not interested in doing a deal and he was unwilling to push for a move.
Mahrez ended up signing a new improved deal to keep him at the King Power Stadium until 2020, but has now revealed the extent of Arsenal's interest.
"There was contact with Arsenal," Mahrez told Canal Football Club. "But Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive. I did not want to create a conflict when the offer came in.
"It's now up to me to prove myself again."
