Arsene Wenger says handing Mesut Ozil a bumper new deal at the club was a better option than going out and buying a replacement.
Ozil has signed a new deal with the Gunners that keeps him at the club until 2021 with a reported wage that is said to be a massive £350,000 a week.
Wenger believes sourcing a replacement for Ozil - who had entered the last six months of his contract - would have proved even more expensive to the club.
'When you let a player go you have to buy somebody of the same calibre and if you add the transfer needed and the wages will be similar,' Wenger said.
'On top of that we have to pay a transfer [fee].
'So, overall I think Mesut for us was the cheapest option.'
