Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers midway through the season and has turned around the fortunes of the club in his year in charge at Anfield with them now considered to be title contenders.

The Reds have appeared in two cup finals since his arrival, the Europa League and League Cup, but both lost, and they now sit just two points off the top of Premier League.

"Whatever happens on the football pitch in the future only time will tell, but I don't think you could pick a better character to fit this club," Ayre, who is standing down at the end of the season, told the Daily Express.

"Seeing that unfold has certainly given me satisfaction.

"It is a massive challenge and won't be without its ups and downs but in terms of did we get the right man for the job? There is absolutely no question.

"That stands out a mile."
