It was hoped the 26-year-old would be able to recover in time for the quarter-final clash with Argentina after the 24-9 win over Les Bleus, but further scans have shown O'Mahony is out of action for the foreseeable future.

O'Mahony was "returning to Dublin for specialist opinion" and will take no further part in the World Cup, according to team manager Mick Kearney.

Meanwhile Ireland are nervously waiting to find out if lock Paul O'Connell will recover from his hamstring problem, while fly-half Johny Sexton is being monitored for a groin injury.
