Saints are hoping Matt Targett recovers from a minor knock in time to replace Ryan Bertrand for the clash against Burnley on Sunday.
Targett is likely to come in for the injured England left-back at St Mary's if he overcomes the problem that prevented him from representing the Three Lions' Under-21 side against Kazakhstan on Thursday.
Bertrand returned to Southampton for treatment following Saturday's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Malta at Wembley.
The 27-year-old, who had only recently returned form a knee injury, was substituted after picking up an apparent hamstring strain in the 19th minute and replaced by Danny Rose.
Bertrand will almost certainly miss next Sunday’s home clash with Burnley and could also be out for the mouthwatering Europa League trip to face Inter Milan at the San Siro.
Targett, who is expected to play for England's Under-21s against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday, might now be involved in those matches and the Premier League game at table-topping Manchester City three days later.
