Caroline Wozniacki has secured the year end world number one ranking after beating French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

Wozniacki's hope of ending the year in the top spot did suffer a bit of a wobble earlier this week when she suffered a surprise straight sets defeat at the hands of Samantha Stosur.

The loss meant that Vera Zvonareva's slim chances of toppling her were still alive, Zvonareva needed to make the final with the Dane winning no more matches.

And it was a wobbly start for the twenty year old as she dropped the first set to Schiavone before finally battling back.

It was the French Open champion who was in command in the opening set as she bossed the rallies and the points before breaking in game four.

That single break of serve was enough to see her claim the opening set, she needed a straight sets victory if she had any hope of progressing to the semi-finals.

But Wozniacki stepped on the gas in the second and put in a good performance to drop just two more games for the rest of the match.

But she didn't have it all her own way as both sets two and three did take forty minutes. However the world number one found a way through to wrap up the match 3-6 6-1 6-1.

Speaking to the WTA after the match she said: "Francesca was playing really, really well in the first set. I didn't have too many chances to break her.

"I knew I had to stay focused and from there I didn't allow her to dictate the points as much. I'm really happy to win."

In the absence of Serena Williams since Wimbledon the Dane has taken over the top spot with six titles under her belt this season.

The victory over Schiavone saw Wozniacki secure her place in the semi final alongside Samantha Stosur, Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva.
