Five-time champion Federer beat Richard Gasquet 6-2 7-5 6-4 while Djokovic, who has six Melbourne titles on his CV, took care of Albert Ramos-Vinolas, but suffered an injury scare along the way.

The 30-year-old Serbian is playing his first tournament since Wimbledon following to a wrist injury, but it was his back and leg that required treatment during the contest.

He was not at his best and will need to raise his game to win a seventh crown, but a 6-2 6-3 6-3 triumph was good enough to see him move past his Spanish opponent on Saturday.

Djokovic next faces 21-year-old South Korean Hyeon Chung while Federer plays Hungarian Marton Fucsovics for the first time in his career for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Swiss veteran comfortably took care of Frenchman Gasquet in one hour and 59 minutes and remains on course for his 20th Grand Slam title.
