The Swiss world number three has enjoyed another fine year in 2016; winning his third Grand Slam at last month's US Open and already has an eye on making a strong start to next year.

Wawrinka claimed his maiden major at the Australian Open in 2014 and will use his first trip to the Brisbane International as part of his preparations for Melbourne.

Rafael Nadal, Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza have already confirmed their presence at the year-opening tournament, which gets underway on January 1.

The 31-year-old admits he is looking forward to the event and is confident his participation will benefit him when it comes to the Australian Open.

"I'm excited to be heading to the Brisbane International for the first time in my career," Wawrinka said in a statement.

"I've heard such great things about the event and it feels like the right time to change up the start of my season."
