The 36-year-old ended her 2017 season early in the year after announcing that she was pregnant and gave birth to her daughter in September.

The American made it clear that she was not going to retire and felt there were still a few years left in the legs, but it seemed as though she might struggle to make it back in time for the Australia Open in January.

However, having won the title this year, it seems as though she has every intention of lining up at Melbourne Park and took a giant step towards that goal by squaring off with Jelena Ostapenko in the UAE.

The Florida resident struggled with her movement early on but eventually got into her stride before going down 6-2 3-6 (10-5) to the French Open champion.

The year’s first 'Slam starts on January 15 and the world number 22 is happy to combine being a mother and playing tennis once again.

"I'm excited. It's good to be back on court, this is such a good time for me," she told Eurosport. "Motherhood is phenomenal. I was a little worried out there - I looked at my camp and asked, 'Is Olympia OK?"
