Spotify has started testing an official app for the Apple Watch.

Beta testers of the iOS app have now begun to gain access to the service, with the first version seemingly limited to just controlling playback at the moment.

As The Verge reports, it's not yet clear if Spotify plans to add offline support, which would allow Premium subscribers to sync songs to an Apple Watch - meaning they could use it without an iPhone nearby.

The streaming service has been working closely with the developer of Snowy, an unofficial app that brought the feature to the Apple Watch.

Andrew Chang revealed last year that the company had hired him to create an app using the company's iOS SDK, and now it seems that app is now finally emerging.

After Chang previously updated users on issues Spotify reps had with his app, he later revealed he was being brought on board.

He wrote in April: "I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be working closely with Spotify to bring Snowy to the Apple Watch as part of an official Spotify iOS app.

"Spotify's powerful iOS SDK made it possible to develop Snowy, but I can't wait to take things to the next level with the expertise and tools available at Spotify.

"While I can't give any estimates as to when it'll be available, you can rest assured that a Spotify Apple Watch companion app is in the pipeline."
