It's been reported that the messaging service - which is owned by Facebook - will use the feature as a way for businesses to reach potential customers, and bring in money for the company itself.

According to India's Economic Times, WhatsApp vice president Chris Daniels told New Delhi media: "That is going to be primary monetisation mode for the company as well as an opportunity for businesses to reach people on WhatsApp."

Status allows users to post photos, videos and GIFs that disappear after 24 hours - similar to Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram stories.

While Daniels didn't confirm when ads would be coming to WhatsApp, the company has also not responding to a request for comment, according to CNET.

As previously reported, Facebook is keen for the service - which is bought in 2014 for $19 billion - to start making money.

In August WhatsApp said businesses would be able to use the app to give real-time customer service and pass on information such as boarding passes and shipping confirmations.
