Coronation Street's Jack Duckworth dies with a smile on his face tonight (08.11.10) as he kisses the ghost of his late wife Vera.
There won't be a dry eye in Britain. Jack is a 'Corrie' legend and it won't be the same without him. But the scenes are acted beautifully, and seeing Vera back makes it a perfect ending.
The legendary character passes away in his favourite armchair - the same place Vera (Liz Dawn) died two years ago - after losing his battle with cancer, and in a touching farewell scene the couple are reunited for a final kiss.
In the emotional scene, Jack - who has been played by actor Bill Tarmey for 31 years - drifts in and out of consciousness as Vera appears in front of him, and starts nagging him about his scruffy appearance.
He gives her a tender smooch as they slow dance to Matt Monro's 'Softly As I Leave You' before Jack passes away.
Bill - who decided to quit the ITV1 soap earlier this year due to ongoing health problems - said: "It's a fitting send off for such a great character.
In recent weeks, Jack has been acting as a secret millionaire to his fellow Weatherfield residents, providing them with gifts and acts of kindness after discovering he was dying.
Show bosses are hoping the poignant scenes will have the whole of Britain teary-eyed.
A 'Coronation Street' source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "There won't be a dry eye in Britain. Jack is a 'Corrie' legend and it won't be the same without him. But the scenes are acted beautifully, and seeing Vera back makes it a perfect ending."
